Big Mac learns the hard way

- Interview by CHRIS McKENNA

CONOR McGREGOR cannot be questioned for his heart and bravery.

There is no doubt he would have gone out on a stretcher against Floyd Mayweather last weekend if he needed to, but the bottom line is he simply could not box.

He didn’t have the skill-set to really trouble Mayweather or the ability to throw punches that could hurt the American.

The Irishman ran out of gas after four rounds. He had a stamina issue as far as boxing is concerned and he learned quickly it is a totally different discipline than UFC.

But what about Mayweather? He is 40, has been out of the ring for two years and he didn’t look great.

What if it had been Terence Crawford, the unified light-welterweight king, who had been in there with either of them?

That would have been a tough fight for Mayweather and you have got to think that Crawford would have the beating of him now. And if it was Crawford against McGregor, you’ve got to think it wouldn’t have gone into round 10.

Saying all that, Mayweather gave a lot of weight and height away but he knew what he was doing. He knew he was going to win and he knew he was going to make a serious amount of money.

There are a lot of things that people don’t like about him but when it comes to making money from boxing, he is a genius.

Getting down to serious business now that money maker is out of the way, we have what could be the fight of the decade when Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez faces Gennady Golovkin on September 16.

These guys are both at the top of their game, they’re both experienced and they’re both champions.

This is going to be a serious fight to crown one of them middleweight king.

Golovkin is going into the lion’s den that will be Las Vegas on a big Mexican holiday weekend but he is confident.

This is a fight that I can’t wait to see and I think all true boxing fans will be champing at the bit for this one.

People who know anything about the sport know they are going to see something special.
