HARRY’S BACK ON TRACK

PAGES OF FANTASTIC START WITH HORSE RACING

- By JAMES RICHARDSON

NEWMARKET’S July Cup hero Harry Angel is the sponsor’s favourite for Saturday’s Group One 32Red Sprint Cup Stakes at Haydock.

He heads 20 entries at the latest confirmation stage.

In fact the first six home in that Newmarket race could line up again.

Harry Angel has been off since that exciting success but jockey Adam Kirby is full of confidence.

“I’ve sat on him since the July Cup and he’s in good nick. He’s moving well and everything’s good,” said Kirby.

“He’ll be fine in the ground. He’ll go through anything. In my eyes, he’s everything you need in one.

“He’s settled down now. He’s still not had many races yet.

“We’re looking forward to it and I’ll let him do the talking – I think he’s very good.”

Limato, who chased Harry Angel home at Newmarket, would need the ground to dry out to take his chance but Brando, who was third, is strongly fancied by connections.

He has since taken a Group One in France and though now five, his trainer, Kevin Ryan, feels he is still improving.

Harry Angel’s owners Godolphin could also be represented by Charlie Appleby’s Blue Point. Last year’s winner Quiet Reflection was not among the entries but The Tin Man, second last season, could line up once again.

Caravaggio has been left in the race despite having an alternative engagement in the Group Two Derrinstown Stud Flying Five Stakes at the Curragh on Sunday.

His trainer Aidan O’Brien also has Cougar Mountain, Washington DC, Spirit Of Valor and Intelligence Cross as possibles.

Tasleet is similar to The Tin Man as he ran a fine race when second to James Fanshawe’s horse at Royal Ascot but then disappointed in the July Cup.

He has attracted some support and he would hold strong claims if returning to top form.

The same could be said of Charlie Hills’ Magical Memory, third in the Sprint Cup two years ago, but below-par when fourth to Brando in France.

Richard Fahey has four entries as he bids to win the Sprint Cup for the first time with Growl, Kimberella, Mr Lupton and Queen Kindly forming a quartet of hopefuls.

Gifted Master, Koropick, Tupi and Spiritual Lady complete the 20 entries.

The sponsor’s bet: 6-4 Harry Angel, 5 Brando, 7 Tasleet, Blue Point, 8 Caravaggio, Limato, The Tin Man, 12 Magical Memory, 20 Spirit Of Valor, Washington DC, 25 Gifted Master, Kimberella, Tupi, 33 others.
