WAKEY AIM TO TY IT UP

Saints’ eyes on Randell

- By TREVOR BAXTER

AS SECRET weapons go, Tyler Randell blew his cover with a two-try debut against Salford last week.

But Wakefield team-mate Matty Ashurst hopes hooker Randell is still enough of an unknown quantity to fly under the radar once more tonight against top-four rivals St Helens.

A Wakey win and the five-time Grand Final champions can kiss goodbye to their ambitions.

Work

Former Saint Ashurst said: “Teams won’t know too much about him.

“But they’ll probably start doing more research on him now. Tyler was outstanding at Salford and you can’t argue with two tries.

“We are not a team of superstars but we are all willing to work hard for each other. That’s what has got us to where we are.

“And Tyler has come on board and fitted in straight away. Hopefully he can keep it going.”

Wakefield have defied the odds to stay on course for an unlikely play-off semi-final. But Ashurst, who has missed only one game this season, isn’t so shocked.

He said: “We have always had belief in the group that we could build on last season.

“No-one thought we could make the top eight but we ended up doing it. So, another year of keeping this team together, plus the additions we have made, have given us something extra.

“It’s always a case of proving people wrong here and hopefully we can continue to do that.”

Saints have lost three of their last four and Ashurst added: “They gave us a good hiding last time and we’re looking to put that right.”
