MIKE WARD WHAT’S HOT TO WATCH TODAY

-

THE great thing about

DOCTOR FOSTER, which continues tonight on BBC1 (9pm), is that nothing is entirely black and white. On face value, we’re obviously going to side with Suranne Jones’ character, GP Gemma, as she struggles with her git of an ex-husband swanning back into the neighbourhood with his smarmy new wife, and root for her as she tries to get her own back. But at the same time, we’re obviously meant to observe what she gets up to (tonight she’s investigating his secrets) and think: “Wow, you really are fantastically mental.”

Likewise, a tiny part of us – just a wee one, mind – may accept that this ex of hers, Simon (Bertie Carvel), has a point, saying it’s time they all moved on.

But then you see how he’s cruelly brainwashed their son, and you look at that smug, self-satisfied face of his, and you can’t help but want to punch his lights out. ELSEWHERE tonight, ROBSON GREEN’S

COASTAL LIVES (8pm, ITV) is a new six-part travel series where Robson meets two types of people – those who’ve lived and worked by the sea for generations and those who’ve turned up pretty recently, mostly looking for an alternative to city life. He starts on the Isle of Skye. STRAIGHT after that, 100 YEAR OLD DRIVING

SCHOOL (9pm, ITV) meets veteran motorists who’ve agreed to undergo assessments to see if they really ought to still be on the road. They include 102-year-old ex-Navy chap John – who, to his credit, has quite an effective technique for monitoring oncoming traffic, even if it does involve him driving on the wrong side of the road.
