BRITAIN was last night braced for a battering as 75mph winds roar in from the Atlantic.

Storm Aileen – the first named storm of the season – will also bring torrential rain, with possible flooding and even damage to buildings, forecasters warn.

Weather alerts were in place for many regions across the country today.

BRITAIN is facing being blasted by 75mph gales as the first named storm of this year sweeps in.

Storm Aileen is expected to bring 1.5 inches of rain and “very strong winds” across much of England and Wales today.

Forecasters warned of flooding, power cuts and damage to buildings and trees. Aileen is the earliest autumn named storm – last year’s did not blast in until November 20.

An amber severe weather warning has been issued in Cheshire, Lancashire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.

A yellow weather warning for rain is also in place in Northern Ireland, northern England and southern Scotland. Met Office chief forecaster Frank Saunders said: “The low-pressure system will move fairly swiftly from west to east over the UK and the winds will ease by the afternoon, leaving a day of blustery showers.”

Rod Dennis, from the RAC, said: “Aileen’s impact is likely to be short but sharp in the north of England.”

The AA warned: “Road users should be aware of the risk of trees and other debris lying in the road.”
