Duke quizzes former addicts

PRINCE William talked about legalising hard drugs as he questioned addicts at a rehab charity yesterday.

The Duke of Cambridge told three former users it was a “question I had to ask” after chatting to them.

One recovering addict replied she thought it was “a good idea” and that money was wasted on “drug laws”.

William was fascinated as he urged them to tell him why drugs should be made legal.

He was visiting Londonbased Spitalfields Crypt Trust, which for more than 50 years has helped booze and drug addicts.

The 35-year-old prince, right, said: “Can I ask you a very massive question? It’s a big one.

“There’s obviously a lot of pressure growing in areas about legalising drugs and things like that.”

He asked: “What are your individual opinions on that?

“I know it’s a big question, but you seem like the key people to actually get a very good idea as to, you know, what are the big dangers there. What are the feelings?”

Heather Blackburn, 49, replied that she ® backed the idea of drugs being legalised, adding: “Most of the people I’ve known in recovery, 95%, had massive trauma and terrible stuff happen to them and using drugs to cope. “And then you get put in prison, you don’t get the facilities and the actual help you need, you get punished. “Which is not going to help anyone taking drugs. It’s going to even do more harm I think.” Recovering alcoholic Grace Gunn, who is training to be a midwife, told him: “There are still drugs in prison, you can’t eliminate that fact that people do get drugs into prison. “But I’m a true believer that people who end up in these places, we’re damaged people. “You can’t have two-year waiting lists for trauma therapy. I’ve been waiting five years.” Wills also joked with 19-year-old Grace that in her new career he may see her soon, with wife Princess Kate pregnant. The dad-of-two was given a gift of two wooden owls for Prince George, four, two-year-old Princess Charlotte and a third for their unborn child.
