JOHNSON IS DIE-LIGHTED

-

LEE JOHNSON’S club record purchase of giant Senegal striker Famara Diedhiou is beginning to look like money well spent for Bristol City.

The £5.3m hitman got his third goal in a week to stun Premier League Stoke before Matty Taylor sealed victory for the Championship side.

Diedhiou pounced for a tap-in after Taylor had outpaced Kevin Wimmer to reach Aden Flint’s headed clearance and fire against the post.

If it had not been for stand-in goalkeeper Lee Grant, the Robins might have led earlier than Diedhiou’s 50th-minute strike.

The ex-Derby keeper, 34, was axed in April when Jack Butland recovered from a serious ankle injury, even though he was voted the club’s player of the year.

But given the chance to start a cup game, he spared manager Mark Hughes what could have been an embarrassing opening five minutes.

His best save stopped Diedhiou when he was put through by Wimmer’s error but Grant produced another fine save to deny Josh Brownhill.

Stoke twice missed chances to equalise.

First substitute Saido Berahino fired wide after a clever turn and then Ramadan Sobhi lifted a shot over keeper Luke Steele but wide of the empty net.

They were made to pay when Taylor shook off Wimmer again to beat Grant with a fine left-foot shot on the hour.
