TO RESCUE

-

ROBBIE BRADY scored a superb 96th-minute freekick to force extra time.

The Ireland winger netted after Leeds thought they had won it through Pable Hernandez’s controversial penalty in the 93rd minute.

However, Brady’s goal meant that another 30 minutes was needed.

Left-back Charlie Taylor, who left Elland Road in the summer, was caught out of position as substitute Hadi Sakho netted the 80th-minute opener for Leeds.

He latched on to Hernandez’s through ball and slotted through the legs of keeper Nick Pope.

But Chris Wood, another former Leeds player, looked to have come to Taylor’s rescue by netting an 88th-minute penalty after Gaetano Berardi fouled Kevin Long.

Taylor had actually created two of the first half ’s best chances.

His electric early run to the by-line ended with a cross that just evaded Ashley Barnes.

And he did even better just before the half-hour mark when he picked out the same team-mate with an accurate cross that was nodded just wide.

That was the start of a spell of pressure from the Premier League side, who made seven changes from the draw at Liverpool.

Kevin Long should have done better with a free header from Johann Berg Gudmundsson’s free-kick but planted the ball wide.

Scott Arfield’s clever flicked shot went just the wrong side of the post and Barnes missed with another header, from Phil Bardsley’s centre.

The Leeds fans booed Taylor, who declined to play for Leeds at the end of last season as he looked for a transfer away.

And they were no less kind to Wood, who joined Burnley for a club record £16m last month.
