Trinity’s Vue will improve

- by JEREMY CROSS

WAKEFIELD TRINITY will stay at Belle Vue after agreeing a deal in principle with the council to build a £12m stadium on the site.

Club bosses have thrashed out an agreement with Wakefield Council leader Peter Box and the ground’s owner Manni Hussain.

The proposal will see a 10,000-capacity stadium built in time for the start of the 2020 Super League season.

Trinity will remain at Belle Vue next season, subject to the deal being agreed by all parties in the next six weeks.

The news is a huge boost for long-suffering fans who have been waiting for a new stadium to be built since 2010.

Happy

A site had been picked on the outskirts of the city but that deal stalled.

Wakefield Council will take out a new lease on the Belle Vue site, where building work is expected to start in 12 months’ time.

The site will also include retail, residential and entertainment developments.

Trinity owner and chairman Michael Carter told Starsport: “Myself and Chris Brereton (co-owner) are really happy.

“After some tense negotiations, we have agreed in principle a future ground for Wakefield Trinity.”

Council leader Box said: “For the sake of the fans and the club, I would hope that this plan can be delivered as soon as possible so that we can start to make this stadium a reality.”
