HUGH Hefner was yesterday sent off clad in his velvet smoking jacket, satin pyjamas, slippers and cravat. He was laid to rest at Westwood Village Memorial Park in Los Angeles in a plot next to Hollywood film legend Marilyn Monroe.

His white sailor’s hat, his pipe and a copy of the first Playboy magazine were also sealed in his casket.

It is understood only his four children, wife Crystal Harris and a few close friends attended the private ceremony, according to US reports.

He bought the burial spot for £56,000 in 1992.

Hefner, who died aged 91 of natural causes at his Playboy mansion, made the request to be laid to rest in the attire he spent most of his life wearing.

A source said he added the clause to his will because he “liked the idea of being as comfortable in the afterlife as he was in the Playboy mansion”.

The insider added Hefner had always wanted his prized hat and pipe in his coffin after he read about the ancient Egyptians burying their dead with meaningful artefacts.

He said: “Hef didn’t necessarily believe in God or heaven, but he thought he may as well hedge his bets and have his most treasured possessions in his coffin on the off-chance he would need them in an afterlife.”

Meanwhile, it emerged Hefner had given Crystal a £5.2million home and £3.7m.
