place in the Burnley team following his £30m move to Everton, but the Toffees’ summer signing cannot be blamed for their ineffectiveness up top.
Everton were restricted to long-range efforts from Niasse and Idrissa Gueye before the break, with boos following them as they trotted off after 45 minutes.
The mood wasn’t lifted after the restart with Niasse and Dominic Calvert-Lewin heading wide timidly.
Everton thought they had a strong shout for a penalty when they claimed Matt Lowton had got a raised arm in the way of the ball. But referee Jon Moss waved away protests from an angry Rooney, who had come off the bench just after the hour mark.

It followed a similar theme of plenty of possession, little penetration, even less pace and balls put out wide, only to be easily cleared when the crosses came in.
Calvert-Lewin had a late shot saved by Pope but a side with so much talent in it should be doing much better, with all eyes now firmly on the manager.
