VANESSA Woodfield and Charity Dingle end up enjoying a steamy girl-ongirl snog next week.
The pair get locked in the Woolpack cellar during a fancy dress party.
Vanessa (Michelle Hardwick) goes to change a barrel and Charity (Emma Atkins) follows. When they discover they are trapped, they tuck into the whisky, get drunk and start kissing.
Last night actress Emma said the storyline was a surprise as her character had not had a lesbian fling since Zoe Tate in 2010.
She said: “I was quite shocked because Charity’s not really been with a woman for a while and Vanessa and Charity haven’t really had any conversation other than when serving her in the pub. So it was extremely left field.
“Charity just takes advantage and enjoys the moment! And surprisingly Vanessa responds willingly, and suddenly they are in a heated embrace!
“Vanessa and Charity are not a great match in that they are so different – Vanessa is moralistic and Charity’s not always willing to delve into an ethical state of affairs. But I think the audience will find themselves, quite surprisingly, liking the coupling.” DOWNTON’S Rob James-Collier claims playing gay butler Thomas Barrow in the ITV drama has hindered him in Hollywood.
He tells Radio Times: “I think audiences in the US can identify with the quintessential English gent and lady, whereas a neurotic, dark, gay character is a hard thing to put into the market.
“I’ve had offers that happened to be gay characters but I want something different.”
