Scholes in frame to boss Oldham

- By CHRIS McKENNA

PAUL SCHOLES has held talks with Oldham about taking over as their new manager.

The Manchester United legend was interviewed by the League One club yesterday.

Oldham have yet to make the former England midfielder an offer but he is in the running for the job.

Current caretaker boss Richie Wellens, who started his playing career at Old Trafford, is also being considered as permanent manager after a run of three straight wins in the league and Checkatrade Trophy.

The players and fans have been impressed by Wellens after wins over Peterborough and Portsmouth helped lift the Latics away from the drop zone.

Four-time Champions League winner Clarence Seedorf has also been interviewed about the post at Boundary Park but is no longer believed to be a target.

Oldham have refused to

confirm if they have met with Scholes but have been without a permanent boss since John Sheridan left the club last month.

Scholes, a lifelong fan of Oldham, regularly attends games at Boundary Park and will be well aware of the club precarious financial situation.

But he is keen on getting into management after starting his UEFA A Licence course last year.

He did hold talks with Oldham back in 2015 when Lee Johnson left the club but decided against taking the job as he didn’t feel it was the right time.

Scholes, who part owns non-League Salford City with Gary and Phil Neville, Ryan Giggs and Nicky Butt, is now considering the job again.

And the lure of starting out as a boss at a club that is so close to his heart may be too good to turn down this time, even if they are facing a fight to stay in League One.
