Gylfi: I am really struggling to find my Goodison spark

- By PAUL BROWN

GYLFI SIGURDSSON admits he has struggled to live up to his record £45m price tag at Everton.

The Iceland star has yet to score or provide an assist in the Premier League this season after joining from Swansea.

Sigurdsson’s struggling Everton side were rescued by a late Wayne Rooney penalty in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Brighton.

But he is determined to play his part in turning things around at Goodison.

He said: “It is not going as I had hoped – for the team as well.

‘‘Personally and collectively we are just off our best. That is reflecting in individual ® performances. But it’s small margins. I don’t think we’re a mile off getting results.

“A couple of scruffy wins would bring some confidence to the team and that’s sometimes all you need.

“The next game is the most important one. We just need to win. Once we do that the confidence will come back into the team and things will become a bit easier for us.

“We just have to work our way through this. We are not scoring enough goals and we are conceding too many. I don’t think we are too far away but things just aren’t clicking

“We’re all more than determined to turn it around. We have some big players.”

Pressure

Sirgurdsson has yet to make any real impact, but he is not the only player under-performing as the pressure builds on boss Ronald Koeman (left). The Toffees boss spent close to £150m transforming their squad in the summer. But they have managed just eight points from as many games and are on their worst away run for 15 years. Now Koeman faces a crucial clash with Lyon on Thursday night where a defeat would leave them all but out of the Europa League. Everton have just one point from two games so far and Sigurdsson added: “Hopefully we can start getting better results. “We are going to need at least 10 points go through in the Europa League. It would be nice to start against Lyon.”
