SHANE Richie plans to Cut A Long Story Short and get Spandau Ballet back together.
The EastEnders star is mates with Tony Hadley, who quit as frontman of the New Romantic legends earlier this year.
Spandau first reunited in 2009 after an acrimonious split and it was Shane who smoothed things over. And he wants to do it again!
He told me: “I helped them get back together all those years ago, and I’d love to sit down with Tony, Gary and Martin Kemp to try do it again, get them back together.
“Tony is one of my closest mates and for me there is no Spandau without Tony.
“It’s like there’s no Culture Club without Boy George. I didn’t work with Martin on EastEnders Jenner, Kendall Beyoncé. Sam Smith but I know him and I’m a big fan of the band. “I’d love to think I could do it.” The remaining Spandau quartet felt let down by Tony’s decision to quit via social media and have been trying new singers.
Would Shane, who releases his Country Soul album in a few weeks, fancy a go at singing Gold?
He said: “No, I couldn’t audition. Tony is my mate and all our kids are friends with his.”
However, he will be adding a dash of Eighties pop to his live shows.
He revealed: “I’ve just done a version of Nik Kershaw’s I Won’t Let the Sun Go Down. A great country version, it’s like The Pogues meets OneRepublic. Fiddles and steel strings, it’s a great party song.” His love of country means he’s been turning down TV work. He added: “I was going to do a thing for Netflix for three weeks shooting in Prague, but I’m committed to the album now.” Shane accepts that people may snigger at the very idea of him recording a serious country album. He laughed: “I’ve had bands since I was 16 – I know what it’s like to be in a pub and get spat at.” Pet Shop Boys
