COSTA COPS: WE’LL TASER WILD BRITS
Police gun for Magaluf yobs
ROWDY Brit holidaymakers heading to Magaluf next summer face being Tasered by police.
Officials in the Spanish party resort are considering handing officers the stun guns to control the drunken troublemakers.
The town is desperately trying to shake off its notorious image for drunkenness, casual sex and violence. Politician Carlos Tarancon is leading the call after talking with officers who deal with drunk hooligans on Magaluf’s Punta Ballena strip.
The brash street – branded “500 metres of shame” by one official – was the scene of a mass brawl between England and Scotland football fans after a World Cup qualifier in June.
The stun guns could also be brought in on tourist hotspots in nearby Santa Ponsa. Mr Tarancon is among a group of councillors who have demanded “zero tolerance” against misbehaving British holidaymakers.
He claims guns and batons local police currently use are not always the answer with violent people.
And he said batons “can do quite a lot of damage and can even cause broken bones” while guns should only be used in cases of “extreme danger”. The controversial Tasers work by pumping thousands of volts of electricity into the victim’s body.
Earlier this year the local council in Magaluf banned 64 activities – including nudity, drinking alcohol in public spaces and even climbing trees.
Anyone caught breaking the rules will be facing a heavy fine.
