Caretaker’s new broom has Foxes cleaning up
WES MORGAN believes Michael Appleton has pointed Leicester to a brighter future by taking them back to their smash-and-grab best.
The Foxes skipper said under caretaker boss Appleton the team returned to the swashbuckling style of their Premier League triumph for a first victory since August.
Appleton was at Oxford when Leicester won the title in the season before last.
But he had the Foxes looking deadly on the counter-attack, backed up with gritty defending.
“It was more of the Leicester of old, which is good,” said Morgan after an owngoal from Federico Fernandez and Shinji Okazaki’s strike wrapped up the points.
Dominated
“We scored the goals at the right times and we even showed some resilience to concede a goal but still see the game out.
“We had a good start and felt comfortable in possession.
“We felt we dominated the first half and we created chances and caused them problems. All in all it was a good all-round performance.”
Captain Morgan was at the centre of Leicester’s defensive effort that restricted the shot-shy Swans to Alfie Mawson’s scrambled goal when they were 2-0 down.
Far from looking in a state of shock after the sacking of Craig Shakespeare, Morgan and his troops calmly carried out their temporary manager’s instructions to keep their heads after one had rolled.
“Michael told us to ignore all the antics off the field and just focus on the game,” said Morgan.
“At the end of the day, we have no control over what happens off the pitch, in terms of the management, so all we can show is how good we are.
“But it’s about time we started putting some more points on the board.
“We don’t feel like we’ve had a good start to the season.
“To get the points here is great and hopefully we can build on that and get some more on the board.”
Appleton knows he is a rank outsider to get the job on a permanent basis but staying on as an assistant is feasible if Leicester keep winning.
