After upgrading to a smart meter, Peter Morrell hasn’t looked back

PETER Morrell says he has no regrets about upgrading to a smart meter, despite being hesitant at first.

“My old-style gas and electricity meters worked perfectly well, so when I first heard about smart meters I didn’t bother finding out any more,” admits Peter, 72.

“But then I saw an article about how useful a smart meter is and how much simpler it makes things. It helps you keep an eye on how much energy you’re using – and how much it’s costing – so I asked my supplier to put it in.”

Peter, from Rugeley, Staffordshire, was pleasantly surprised to find the meters only took a short time to install.

“When the chap came, it took him less than two hours to fit both the meters and he explained what he was doing as he was going along,” Peter, a retired lecturer, says.

Since switching this time last year, the simple change has made a big difference to the lives of Peter and his wife, Vivienne, 70.

The Morrells no longer have to worry about estimated bills or reading their gas and electricity meters, because their smart meter sends readings to their energy supplier without them lifting a finger.

“I used to have to go into the garage to read the gas and electricity meters, but these days my smart meter does it all for me. It’s wonderful,” Peter says.

Now Peter and Vivienne couldn’t imagine going back to old-style meters.

“If a friend was considering getting a smart meter, I’d definitely recommend it,” says Peter. “The display has a colourcoded display: when I see the reading going into the orange or red zone I check to see what we can switch off.
