I’ll end Smith’s career

WILLIAMS A CUT ABOVE

- By KEVIN FRANCIS

LIAM WILLIAMS wants to put a huge question mark over the future of rival Liam Smith when they clash on Saturday.

The super-welterweight grudge match at Newcastle’s Metro Arena follows the controversial victory by Smith in their first clash in April when Williams retired at the end of the ninth with a cut eye.

Williams was ahead on points and insists that his cut was caused by headbutting from Scouser Smith.

Now Welshman Williams is aiming for revenge and says a triumph for him will cast a doubt on the future of the former light-middleweight champion.

Smith lost his WBO title to Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez last September and has since beaten Marian Cazacu before overcoming Williams.

Williams said: “If I beat him this time around, which I totally believe I will, I think it is genuinely going to make him consider just where he goes next. He is going to question just how far he can go now.

“It is going to be difficult for him once I get the better of him and beat him. It depends how much he wants it.

“He genuinely thought he would beat me, but the way it ended was disappointing all round for everybody.”

The defeat by Smith was the first in the 18-fight career of the Rhondda bruiser, who added: “I have been a lot more focused this time around. I want to show that little something extra when we meet.

“I just want to put an end to it now with him and then carry on and achieve the goals I have set myself.

“There are things I have taken from the first fight that I can exploit. I will know what to expect and I will be ready for it.” Smith v Williams 2 is live on BoxNation and BT Sport this Saturday, starting from 6.55pm.
