WE’VE GOT TO MAKE OUR MARC!

Up your game or face axe warns Richards

- by DARREN WITCOOP

MARC RICHARDS has told his Northampton team-mates they are playing for their futures under boss Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.

The Cobblers are in the mire after a woeful start to the season.

And Richards knows time is running out for them to deliver for Hasselbaink.

Club captain Richards said: “The transfer window is just around the corner, so we have to prove we belong here long term.

“There are quite a few of us who are out of contract next summer.

“If we don’t pick up, then the manager will want to improve the squad and bring in his own players in January.

“That’s normal and he will be well within his rights to make changes. The buck stops with us. It has not been good enough and we don’t need telling.

“We need to transfer those performances from the training ground into matches.

“There’s still a lot of games left and time is on our side. But if we want to be part of his plans, then we need to start winning games on a consistent basis.”

Hasselbaink won his first two games in charge but it’s pretty much been downhill since and his side head to Oxford today in the relegation zone.

Richards added: “We are good enough to get ourselves out of trouble.

“It’s about finding momentum, which has eluded us so far.

“But we are all pushing in the right direction. As a club we have been through a lot in the last few years.

“We came through the other side with the financial issues and we now have to make sure we do the same on the pitch.”
