SIR David Attenborough’s Blue Planet II has made him the most widely viewed life form on Earth.

The hit BBC programme is now so popular it has 80million viewers in China alone and brought the nation’s internet to a near standstill due to downloads. It is the most watched show of 2017 in Britain – with 14million viewers. The first episode was also the third most-watched programme of the last five years. The show’s popularity, which features the amazing kobudai fish, comes despite China’s lack of environmental campaigners. Viewers were quick to praise the show on Weibo, the Chinese equivalent of Twitter. Fankucha Zhendi said: “I’ve been crying all the time. It’s just so beautiful.” Muhou Jun said: “I watched with my mouth hanging open.”

The series is on track to surpass big budget dramas such as Doctor Who.

Kelvin Yau, BBC Worldwide’s China manager, said: “Many Chinese want to reconnect with the natural world.”
