UK colder than Arctic
BRITAIN is set for a three-week Arctic blast from this Friday as temperatures could plunge to a bone-chilling -15C.
And as England saw its first snow of the autumn yesterday, forecasters have warned it’s going to be colder than the Russian Arctic.
The Pennines in Cumbria were blanketed with the white stuff yesterday as temperatures were expected to drop to -8C in the region last night.
Even the South was set to dip to -5C overnight, while Murmansk – Russia’s most northerly city – was only due to experience lows of -1C.
Met Office forecaster Sophie Yeomans said: “Snow could continue on the Pennines into today.
“Ice is possible and there will be widespread frost.
“It becomes colder on Friday and at the weekend, with showers and snow possible over northern hills.”
The following week is forecast to be bitter with a risk of snow, especially in the North. The second half of November will see the coldest conditions and icy air “displaced from the Arctic”.
Weather Outlook forecaster Brian Gaze said: “It looks like an early winter, with snow not only for the North.”
The mercury could even fall to record lows. Senior AccuWeather meteorologist Alan Reppert said: “There is better than usual potential for -15C temperatures this winter.”
