WAR CABINET CALL TO MAY OVER BREXIT

Plea over ‘national unity’

MINISTERS must create a Winston Churchill-inspired “war cabinet” to prepare for Brexit, a top MP demanded last night.

The plan would be for politicians from all parties to unite in the “national interest”.

Labour’s Frank Field said: “Anyone serious about comparing this historic event to us fighting for survival in World War Two would have followed the move Churchill made. He’d have established a war cabinet. We need a Brexit cabinet – small, with the offer to the Opposition to be on it.”

Mr Field said MPs should “actually try and have a national interest”.

Earlier the Commons’ Public Accounts Committee said failure to have a new customs system ready for Brexit would be “catastrophic”.

Its report said there was a risk of “huge” disruption to businesses, massive queues at Dover and food being left to rot at borders.

Ministers last night steered key Brexit legislation through its first Commons test as MPs dicussed amendments to the European Union (Withdrawal) Bill.

But there was Tory unrest over setting the exit time for 11pm on March 29, 2019.

Critics have called it a “gimmick”.
