BOJO MEETS HUBBY OVER IRAN GAFFE
BLUNDERING Boris Johnson last night vowed to help free a British woman jailed in Iran.
The Foreign Secretary met the husband of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, and promised “no stone would be left unturned” to help her.
The charity worker, 37, has been held in Tehran since April 2016 accused of spying – which she has denied.
And the mum says she was simply visiting family during a two-week holiday with her young daughter Gabriella.
But earlier this month Mr Johnson told a Commons committee hearing that she was in Iran to “train journalists”.
He has since retracted “any suggestion she was there in a professional capacity”. But his gaffe could lead to her five-year jail term being doubled.
Mr Johnson yesterday met her accountant husband Richard Ratcliffe. He said he was working to resolve the case and hoped to “secure a permanent family reunion, not a temporary one”.
Mr Ratcliffe raised the possibility of his wife being granted diplomatic protection by Britain. He said it could be “important and helpful”.
The Foreign Office said Mr Johnson “concluded the meeting by saying that no stone would be left unturned in the case of Mrs Zaghari-Ratcliffe”. Its lawyers would meet soon to discuss the issue further.
