SAUSAGE ROLL GO PIE HIGH

Ad is huge boost

GREGGS stores sold out of sausage rolls yesterday as snack fans flocked to defend its nativity advert.

The bakers apologised after angry Christians blasted its manger scene swapping baby Jesus for one of the pastry treats.

But faithful customers ignored the uproar – and sales soared in many Greggs stores.

Pals Yasmin Lamb and Jillian Neathey said critics needed to “lighten up”. Yasmin, 20, said: “I found it absolutely hilarious.

“I was in hysterics when I first saw the picture. I mean, it’s a sausage roll instead of Jesus! If people were upset about it then they’re just ridiculous.”

Jillian, also 20, added: “I thought it was a beautiful representation of Jesus, a stunning depiction.” And foodie Nick Lavender, 47, said: “I thought it was amazing.

“It’s ridiculous [that people got upset], just chill out. Take the stress out of your lives folks.

“There’s no need to get upset.”

Other Greggs fans poked fun at the outcry by posting a series of memes on the internet.

One showed a gingerbread man on a cross made of sausage rolls, with the caption ‘Easter Meal Deal’.

Novelty

Another swapped Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn for a pastry, writing: “Sorry for replacing JC with sausage roll.”

Even telly babe Amanda Holden joined in.

The Britain’s Got Talent star, 46, shared an image of herself and her fellow judges with their faces swapped for sausage rolls.

The nativity image was promoting Greggs’ advent calendar.

Each door hides vouchers which can be redeemed in its stores for snacks.

A Greggs spokesman said: “Novelty advent calendars have been around for years, so we thought it was time to take the concept up a notch.”

Last night the firm said it did not want to comment further.
