Brian and Jennifer Austin’s smart meter has transformed their lives

WHEN Brian Austin and his wife Jennifer heard they could upgrade their energy meters to smart meters, they knew it would help them keep a closer eye on their energy usage.

And, as their smart meter sends accurate readings to their gas and electricity suppliers automatically, the couple no longer have to wait for the gas man to come – or take their own meter readings.

Brian, 74, admits: “It’s better now I don’t have to go looking at the meters, especially since the gas meter is outside and the electric one is in the garage.

“It was such a bother having to check them every month.”

Having their in-home display in a prominent place, their energy usage is never far from their thoughts.

Brian explains: “Now we have a monitor in the living room, which tells us how much energy we’re using.

“It does make you think more carefully about your appliances and how much electricity they use when they’re switched on, or left on standby.”

What’s more, Brian and Jennifer, 70, find it easier to keep on top of their energy bills, as worrying about estimated bills has become a thing of the past.

“Now, we know what we’re spending – which is great when you’re on a pension.”

The couple – based in Windsor, Berkshire – had their meters changed just days after contacting their energy supplier with a request for an upgrade. And Brian, a retired engineer, says the installation was very straightforward.

He adds: “I’d definitely recommend upgrading to a smart meter because it saves a lot of time.
