PREMIER LEAGUE Unsworth urges board to act

DAVID UNSWORTH has told Everton’s board to make a decision quickly on the club’s next manager.
Caretaker boss Unsworth also told his side that they owe the fans a win at Southampton tomorrow after their humiliating 5-1 Europa League defeat at home to Italian side Atalanta on Thursday night. The relegation-threatened Toffees have been without a permanent boss for over a month since Ronald Koeman was sacked. And Unsworth still hopes he can convince major investor Farhad Moshiri to give him the job full-time – but wants a quick decision either way.

He said: “If we’re further down the line than we were towards getting a permanent manager then that’s fantastic. “As I said at the beginning there were never any guarantees. “The sooner it’s sorted, the better. I think that would be fair comment. What will be, will be.” Everton’s heaviest defeat at home in Europe was another embarrassing low in a season full of them. And Unsworth did not hold back when asked about his views on the performances of the players. He is expected to make wholesale changes at Southampton but he called on those who do feature to repay the club’s supporters. He said: “Certainly when I played there was a different mentality in the changing room. I don’t think you can bawl and shout all the time. “There is a time and place to do that, I don’t think you do it very often. “I can assure you our players know exactly how I feel and what I feel is required to get out of the situation we are in. “I think we always owe it to the Everton fans to perform. “Our players know that. They know my feelings and sentiments towards the great Everton fans. “They owe them a performance and they owe them a win.”
