STER-STRUCK

PREMIER LEAGUE Red-hot Raheem dazzles Kompany

- By JEREMY CROSS

RAHEEM STERLING has got the hunger to become a superstar, according to Vincent Kompany.

Sterling has become the toast of Manchester City this season after outshining all of his team-mates.

He has scored 13 goals to take his game to a new level and drive Pep Guardiola’s men into an eight-point lead at the top of the Premier League table.

The England ace struck deep into stoppage time on Wednesday night to seal a 2-1 win over Southampton at the Etihad.

Boost

It was his third winning goal in the last three games and he is having his best campaign in terms of scoring.

Sterling scored 10 goals last season and his dramatic improvement is a huge boost to Guardiola after the 22-year-old looked set to leave at one stage in the summer.

City team-mate Kompany admits he has seen a change in Sterling this season and said: “I think it’s maybe an inner hunger, maybe that desire to be amongst the best.

“You only achieve that through consistency, so he has done as well as he could this season. I’ve seen the work he has put in behind the scenes and that’s the way forward.”

Kompany admits that knowing City can still ® win games so late is a comforting feeling but would like to see them kill rivals off long before the end.

The Belgium ace added: “We always try to play our game, to dominate and create problems, but there were a lot of bodies behind the ball and it was a difficult night.

“It is just good to know that you can have that feeling that at any time you can make something happen.

“I felt it could still happen, even that late in added time – but I wouldn’t bank on it happening every week, so the sooner we start scoring earlier the better.” DAVID SILVA has signed a one-year extension to keep him at the club until 2020.

The midfielder said: “I am so happy to have committed my future to City.

“I am incredibly proud of what I have achieved in my seven-and-a-half seasons here and, with Pep in charge, I feel we are in a great position to win more trophies.

“The style of football we are playing is a pleasure to be a part of.”
