LEVI Bellfield could not have murdered Lin and Megan Russell as he was at a birthday party 100 miles away, according to the detective who caught him.
Michael Stone, 57, is serving three life sentences for the murders.
His lawyers claim to have obtained a full confession to the crimes by Bellfield, 49, who is serving life for killing three other women.
But yesterday Colin Sutton, a former detective, revealed the serial killer had an alibi. Bellfield’s ex-wife, Jo Collings, said the two of them were at her 25th birthday party in Twickenham, south-west London, at the time of the Russell murders in Kent.
Mr Sutton said: “She was a witness for the prosecution in his trial and would be the very last person who would try to protect Bellfield.
“It was deemed credible enough at the time to rule him out.’’
Collings told the BBC: “He never left my side all day and all night.
“I hate to say it but, hand on my heart, I can say he didn’t do it.’’
Stone’s lawyers claim Bellfield confessed to a fellow prisoner and have submitted a dossier of new evidence to the Criminal Cases Review Commission. But in an audio clip recorded in his cell and released by his family over the weekend, Bellfield – who killed Milly Dowler, 13, Marsha McDonnell, 19, and Amelie Delagrange, 22 – denied he also murdered the Russells. He said the allegations came from a conversation he had with serial rapist Richard Baker. Bellfield said: “It appears Mr Baker has made an allegation of a so-called cell confession. In my view such vile, untrue allegations don’t warrant a response.”
