BRITAIN will be battered by back-to-back storms this week. Gale-force winds and freezing temperatures are set to cause havoc across the nation.

BRITAIN will be battered by back-to-back storms this week, with gale-force winds and freezing temperatures creating havoc.

Within days two separate storm fronts – one called Caroline and the second named Dylan – are set to speed across the country bringing 60mph winds.

On Wednesday – exactly two years since Storm Desmond laid waste to huge areas – wild winds will roar in from the west, hitting terrifying top speeds of 60mph.

The 2015 tempest dumped a record 14inches of rain in England in the space of 24 hours with 5,200 homes flooded in and around Cumbria.

After the midweek storm barrels through Britain on Thursday a bitter polar plunge will see freezing frost coat the country as sub-zero temperatures tighten their grip. With barely any respite from the bitter weather, by the weekend another violent storm will pummel Britain.

Blizzards will heap heavy snow on northern hills and even London will not escape as forecasters warn of serious snow storms.

Blizzard

Former BBC weatherman Michael Fish, who is now forecasting for Netweather, said: “Cold Arctic air is set to return later in the week, tangled up with low pressure, which may even mean blizzard conditions.”

The dire weather warnings have seen bookies slash the odds of a white Christmas.

And bookmakers now face their worst white Christmas payout in history.

William Hill have odds of just 8-13 that snow will fall over the 24 hours of Christmas Day and the number of bets placed already means the industry could be looking at losing millions on December 25.

The long spells of freezing weather could make this Britain’s deadliest winter for decades.

November saw a spike in sudden deaths with 1,142 more people than usual falling prey to a raft of killer infections.
