PARTS of Britain face days of being under eight inches of snow, with the worst of the blizzards yet to hit.
Some areas plunged to -12C yesterday as people woke up to a blanket of the white stuff.
But forecasters issued amber warnings in the UK for tomorrow with heavy snowfall, caused by Storm Caroline’s Arctic winds, expected to cause havoc.
Last night many were warned to stay indoors as hospitals were braced for a flood of patients and some households lost power.
Record
Transport also ground to a halt in the north of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, but children rejoiced as they took to their sledges.
In addition to the snow, the Met Office has issued yellow warnings for gale force winds and torrential rain across the weekend.
A spokesman said: “There is a good chance that some rural communities could become cut off.”
The white-out has led to bookies slashing the odds on this December ending as the coldest on record to 1-2 from evens.
Spokesman John Hill said: “It’s been a bitterly cold start to the month.
“The betting suggests London could see some of the white stuff fall over the next couple of days.”
The horror weekend forecast comes after a canoeist was killed on Thursday in the Dart Gorge on Dartmoor when he became trapped by a fallen tree. AIRPORTS could be plunged into chaos as Iceland’s Oraefajokull volcano threatens to blow, grounding flights.
