CHRISTMAS DINNER PIZZA What: Asda’s festive fast food with chicken, roast potatoes, Brussels sprouts and drizzled with cranberry sauce. Festive figures: 10” pizza, per half pizza – 478 calories, 14.4g fat, 1.93g salt. Verdict: A whole one needs a twohour run to work off but the sprouts are packed with vitamin C to help your immune system. Lidl also have a festive turkey pizza with similar levels. BOOZY BANGERS What: Aldi’s cocktail sausages are made with pork, prosecco, cranberry and orange (from Dec 14). Festive figures: Per two sausages – 62 cals, 4g fat, 0.29g salt. Verdict: Despite the b o o z e you’d have to eat 15 of these to consume the same calories as in a burger. FESTIVE PASTY Festive figures: 185cals, 6.6g fat, 20g sugars. Verdict: With 50 calories or so less than standard all-butter mince pies, these yummy treats from Aldi may be a good option for weightwatc­hers. Full of fibre too! MINCE PIE CHEESE What: Traditiona­l Wensleydal­e cheese with currants and raisins. Festive figures: Per 100g – 376 calories, 26g fat, 1.1g salt. Verdict: A portion of this packs important calcium for your teeth and bones and it’s better for your waist than Asda’s other festive cheese – Wensleydal­e with chocolate and orange. CHOCOLATE SPROUTS Festive figures: Quarter of a pot – 272 calories, 14.9g fat, 23g sugar. Verdict: About the same number of calories as in a large chocolate bar and very high in sugar. Luscious but dangerous. SALMON PATE WITH GIN AND TONIC What: Sainsbury’s Scottish salmon terrine starter has a boozy glaze. Festive figures: Per 100g – 212 calories, 13.5g fat, 1.7g of salt. Verdict: High in salt but salmon is rich in heart-healthy fats and the juniper berries that make gin have been linked to fighting infection. CHRISTMAS CIDER What: M&S’ Devon Christmas Cider is infused with seasonal spices. Festive figures: 4% ABV, 240 cals per 500ml. Verdict: Relatively weak for a cider, so this should be easy on the system. Another bonus is that cider apples are rich in disease-fighting antioxidan­ts. FESTIVE FLAVOURED FIZZ
