ANGRY NUT’S EXCUSE

- By LOUISE BERWICK louise.berwick@dailystar.co.uk

A CRAZED driver who mowed down a crowd of Christmas shoppers says he did it because of the “treatment of Muslims”.

Saeed Noori, an Australian of Afghan descent, ploughed into innocent shoppers as they crossed a road.

The migrant, who police have revealed suffers from mental health and drug issues, appears to have been angry with the treatment of Muslims in the country.

Australian terror police are examining evidence after the incident on one of Melbourne’s busiest roads on Thursday.

His rampage through the city left 19 people needing hospital treatment, including an Irish citizen.

Noori was discharged from hospital yesterday, while some victims remain in ® critical care. Acting chief commissioner, Shane Patton, said Noori had spoken about the mistreatment of Muslims while in hospital.

He added: “We haven’t ruled out terrorism and we continue to explore it.”

Mr Patton revealed that Noori had received care for mental health problems before the attack but was not on the police’s radar.

He added: “We weren’t suspecting he’d be doing anything like this.”

Australia’s Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said Noori, who is yet to be charged, arrived in Australia as a refugee aged 18 in 2006.

Mr Turnbull said Noori had no known links to any extremist groups.
