BRITS GO SPENDING MAD

- By KATE NELSON

BRITS are set to splurge a record £11billion over the seven-day post Christmas blowout that will last into the New Year.

It would make December the biggest spending month ever as bargain hunters splash out £45bn, experts have predicted.

Some shops have slashed prices in their sales by a whopping 92% to reel in buyers.

Professor Joshua Bamfield, director of the Centre for Retail Research, said: “This December is an even bigger spending month than it was a year ago. It will be up by up to 11% on some days.

“November was not good, even with Black Friday included, and discounts during the final days of December are pulling forward spending from January, which will be poor.”

Britain’s all-time monthly spending record is £43bn, set in December 2016, Office for National Statistics records showed.

There are fewer shoppers than last year but they are spending more money, said the Centre for Retail Research.

Chris Boaz, head of marketing at online sales analysts PCA Predict, said: “Christmas sales have defied expectation. We’ve also seen a year-on-year increase of 9% throughout December so far.

“The past few years have seen a steady increase in consumers shopping on their mobile devices during Christmas.

“It means they can shop to their heart’s content without having to leave the dinner table.”

Selfridges enjoyed its biggest Boxing Day sale with more than 1.2million website visits, a 15% hike on last year.

Currys PC World said more than a quarter of a million customers logged on in one hour on Tuesday morning, with 63% using phones to place orders.
