EDUCATION experts who claim Lego is sexist are “talking out of their backsides” say parents.

Academics insist the popular children’s bricks are building gender stereotypes.

Researchers at the University of California’s School of Education say girls are instructed to try make-up, cooking, cleaning and washing up while boys can play at being doctors, astronauts and firefighters.

Dr Stephanie Reich, lead author of the study, said: “It is disappointing, when you hope that toys like Lego will encourage girls into science, technology and engineering jobs.

“When we look at these different sets, we find boys being encouraged to think of themselves as experts who have a high level of education.

“Girls, if they even have a job, are bakers and fashion designers or working to help other people.”

But parents branded the idea “codswallop” in an online backlash.

One said: “Nonsense, all my daughters love Lego Batman, the sets are full of female characters, Batgirl, Catwoman, they love them all.

“Academics talking out their backside.”

Another mum said: “What a load of codswallop. I can’t believe #Lego would put on the box “for girls only”, or “for boys only”. So HOW can it be sexist? What utter nonsense.”
