LEWIS IS JUST NAAN-TASTIC
Jamie dumps out curry-lover Ricko
JAMIE LEWIS cooked up a victory over curry-loving James Richardson to book his place in the last eight of the William Hill World Darts Championship.
Twenty-four hours after knocking out No. 2 seed Peter Wright, Lewis battled past Richardson 4-1.
Richardson’s walk-on music is ‘Vindaloo’ after his favourite food, but it was Welshman Lewis, 26, who became the spice boy of the Ally Pally to set up today’s quarter-final with Darren Webster and a guaranteed £40,000. Few that could match-up have predicted before the tournament started, when Lewis squeezed in as the last of the 72 qualifiers. Now he’s two games away from the final.
Happy
He said: “I did not play like I did against Peter but I am just so happy to get through.
“I wasn’t feeling that great backstage, though I got there in the end.
“Darren is a very good player and it is going to be a good game. It has not sunk in that I am through to the quarter-finals.”
Webster, 49, beat Spain’s Toni Alcinas 4-0 to reach the quarterfinals for the first time in 11 years.
In another shock No.5 seed Mensur Suljovic lost 4-0 to Belgium’s world youth champion Dimitri Van den Bergh.
He will now meet England’s Rob Cross, who maintained his amazing run at his first world championship in his debut year as a professional.
Cross, from Hastings, beat Scotland’s John
Henderson 4-1, hitting seven 180s. Phil Taylor eased into the last eight without losing a set to Keegan Brown.
The Power is edging closer to retirement and who can bet against the 57-year-old legend going all the way to a 17th world title for a dream ending?
He dropped only one leg in moving 2-0 in front, emphasising his superiority with a brilliant 122 checkout on the bull.
Brown, 25, from the Isle of Wight, briefly rallied in the third before missing a crucial double 18 for the set. Taylor seized his chance to take the set and sealed the 4-0 win with a 106 checkout.
