FROM election shocks to royal romances, as well as terror attacks and human tragedies, the last 12 months have certainly been a rollercoas­ter ride. Along the way there has also been plenty of television, movie and celebrity drama, not to mention some smashing sporting triumphs, too. Here JAMES MOORE takes a look back at some of the most memorable events that shaped 2017…

JANUARY… Gong glory: Andy Murray is knighted in the New Year’s Honours List. Tycoon takeover: Donald Trump becomes 45th US president. Child slaying: Katie Rough, seven, is smothered and knifed in a York park by a teenager. The 16-year-old killer later gets a life sentence. Screen favourites: Celebrity Big Brother returns, to be won by Loose Women’s Coleen Nolan. T2 Trainspott­ing hits cinemas. FEBRUARY… Beckileaks: Emails allegedly reveal David Beckham’s anger at not being knighted. Oscars cock-up: The 89th Academy Awards sees hit movie La La Land, starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, wrongly named best picture. Gruesome gales: Storm Doris, with winds of up to 94 mph, kills three. Piegate: Roly poly Sutton Utd sub goalie Wayne Shaw eats a pasty during an FA Cup clash with Arsenal. Soap woe: EastEnders’ Danny Dyer takes a break from the show through “exhaustion”. MARCH… Brexit button: The government triggers Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty – signalling the departure of the UK from the European Union. Westminste­r attack: Khalid Masood, 52, kills four people with a car on Westminste­r Bridge, then stabs PC Keith Palmer dead outside the Houses of Parliament. Scary split: Ex-Spice Girl Mel B files for divorce from Stephen Belafonte. Money matters: The 12-sided £1 coin is released. Cop dramas: Line Of Duty and Broadchurc­h are ratings winners. APRIL… Marine free: Sgt Alexander Blackman, who shot dead an injured Taliban fighter, exits prison. Toxic terror: The US launches missiles against a Syrian air base after a suspected chemical attack. Big hit: Britain’s Anthony Joshua, 28, becomes WBA World Heavyweigh­t champion beating Ukraine’s Wladimir Klitschko at Wembley. MAY… Moors murderer dies: Ian Brady who killed five children, dies at 79. Duke retires: Prince Philip, 96, decides to step down from royal duties. Bugged: NHS computers are hit by a ransomware cyberattac­k. Concert blast: Suicide bomber Salman Abedi kills 22 at Manchester Arena. JUNE… London Bridge attack: Three Islamic terrorists using a van and knives leave eight people dead. Ballot bash: Theresa May’s snap general election backfires as the Tories lose their majority. Cup win: England take the U-20s football World Cup beating Venezuela 1-0. High rise tragedy: Fire engulfs London’s Grenfell Tower killing 71 people. Van horror: A man dies after a vehicle is driven into pedestrian­s near a London mosque. Hot hits: A heatwave sees temperatur­es hit 34.4C leading to a dry Glastonbur­y where Ed Sheeran headlines. Hamster crash: The Grand Tour’s Richard Hammond narrowly avoids death in a car accident. JULY… Brit of all right: Lewis Hamilton wins the British Grand Prix, later the year’s F1 title, Johanna Konta reaches the semi-finals of Wimbledon and Chris Froome claims fourth Tour de France. Baby row: After huge controvers­y about his treatment, terminally ill Charlie Gard dies. War epic: 1D’s Harry Styles, 23, makes his debut in Dunkirk. Mind the gap: BBC reveals Chris Evans is top £2.2million earner, and a pay gulf between male and female stars. Time Lady: TV bosses name Jodie Whittaker as TV’s first female Doctor Who. AUGUST… Lionesses roar: England’s female footballer­s make the semi-finals of Euro 2017. Money man: Neymar moves from Barcelona to Paris Saint-German for a record £198million. Model hell: British beauty Chloe Ayling, 20, alleges she was drugged and kidnapped in Italy. Barcelona bloodshed: A total of 13 people are killed in terror attacks. Bong blow: The chimes of Parliament’s Big Ben fall silent for repairs. Telly victor: Ex-Girls Aloud star Sarah Harding wins Celebrity Big Brother. On track: Mo Farah gets 10,000metre gold at the World Athletics Championsh­ips, Usain Bolt retires, Floyd Mayweather floors Conor McGregor. SEPTEMBER… Killer storm: Hurricane Irma sweeps across the Caribbean and US, killing 134. Rooney rap: Everton’s Wayne Rooney is caught drink driving in a 29-year-old woman’s car. Baby joy: The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge announce a third child. Tube blast: A terror attack on a train at a London Undergroun­d station injures 29. Plane crazy: Ryanair cancels thousands of flights in a cockup over pilots’ rosters. OCTOBER… England qualify: The Three Lions book their place at football’s 2018 World Cup in Russia. Med meltdown: Catalonia’s leaders declare independen­ce from Spain. Deadliest mass shooting: Stephen Paddock opens fire at a Las Vegas music festival killing 58.

Conference crisis: PM Theresa May loses her voice during her speech to the Tory faithful. Sex pest: Movie mogul Harvey Weinstein faces allegation­s of sexual abuse. Revelation­s about actor Kevin Spacey follow. Boxbusters: The BBC’s Blue Planet II is the talk of telly. Great British Bake Off judge Prue Leith mistakenly SHAMED: Rooney tweets the winner early. NOVEMBER… Political pest: Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon resigns over “inappropri­ate behaviour”. Royal joy: Prince Harry and American actress Meghan Markle announce their engagement. Robert Mugabe toppled: The controvers­ial Zimbabwean leader resigns after a coup. DECEMBER… Weather bomb: Heavy snowfall causes school and traffic chaos across much of the UK. Jungle joy: Ant McPartlin puts rehab behind him to front ITV’s I’m A Celebrity, won by Made In Chelsea’s Georgia Toffolo. TV winners: Boyband Rak-Su win the X Factor, Holby City’s Joe McFadden wins BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing and athlete Mo Farah is named BBC Sports Personalit­y of the Year. Sci-fi thriller: Daisy Ridley shines in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
