Lewis rips demolition man apart

- by RICHARD LEWIS

JAMIE LEWIS smashed in an amazing 14 180s to create history as he reached the semi-final of the William Hill World Darts Championship yesterday.

Lewis, 26, demolished Darren ‘The Demolition Man’ Webster 5-0 with a stunning performance at Ally Pally to become the first player to go from the preliminary round into the last four.

“It is just not sinking in,” said Welshman Lewis, 26, who will now bank £85,000 for reaching the semis.

Webster, 49, the No.23 seed, won just five legs and had no answer to Lewis’ mammoth scoring.

Lewis, who won it on double six, ended with an average of 101.26, while Webster, who hit four 180s, had 91.35.

The second quarter-final of the day was one of the best-ever matches in the championship.

And in the end, England’s Rob Cross, in his first season as a professional, found just enough to beat Belgian’s World Youth champ Dimitri van den Bergh 5-4.

Cross, 27, had led 4-1 before Van den Bergh, 23, came back to take it to a decider.

Having grabbed glory after Van den Bergh bounced out on double six, Cross said: “The best player lost. I do not know want happened, I just felt lethargic and Dimitri had everything – he is going to be special.”

The standard was immense as Van den Bergh hit 13 180s and Cross landed 11.
