ROY FEARS A VIDEO NASTY
ROY HODGSON reckons the introduction of video technology could end in chaos.
His Crystal Palace side face Brighton on Monday, when the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system will be used in a competitive match in England for the first time.
The Eagles manager (inset) insists he is not against the use of technology.
But after witnessing the system in operation, Hodgson has seen the problems it can create.
He said: “I experienced it during the Confederations Cup, albeit from a television studio, and it was chaotic there.
“It didn’t work very well because the communication between the referee and the guy on the machine wasn’t good.
“Could it be a good thing? Of course.
“No one wanted goalline technology and now we ® can’t live without it, so I am certainly not one of those people who would suggest there’s no future for technology.
“If it stops gross injustices then I think we’d be all for it.”
But Hodgson believes video technology will not remove controversy. He added: “The issue then is what is a gross injustice? And how many times do you need to see the incident before you have an opinion?
“I see a lot of things flagged up on television – was it a penalty? Was it not? Was it offside? Was it not?
“After watching with other people, we can’t come to a conclusion because one person will say definitely yes, one will say definitely no.
“So how do we get to a stage where we only use it for the gross injustices?
“That’s my fear.”
