Bangers are now classics

-

GOT a 90s car? Then hang on to it, because chances are it’s already a rare classic.

That’s the result of a study by the Honest John website which shows that 90s cars are vanishing at an alarming rate.

Just 100s remain of cars like Ford’s Mondeo, Escort and Fiesta, along with Vauxhall’s Cavalier, Astra and Corsa.

They sold millions in the 90s but their survival rates are now less than one per cent.

Keith Moody, editor of Honest John Classics, said: “The fact is that cars we grew up with, that our mums and dads drove us around in, are dying out.

“For example, 2,613 Rover 400s were taken off our roads in 2016. That’s 21% of the total number left. At the current rate, they will all be gone in five years.

“It’s a similar story for the Citroen Saxo, which defined modified motoring for the Max Power generation.

In 2016 an amazing 2,505 were destroyed – 24% of the total left. A decent Saxo VTS could now be worth £6,000, while a Rover 400 Tourer could fetch £2,000.” Keith blames scrappage schemes, adding: “The biggest reason is the 2009-10 scrappage scheme. The startling survival rates of the cars you used to see on every street and at every service station means that demand for them is now starting to outstrip supply.

“While we’ve seen a lot of 1990s nostalgia in the past few years, with everything from Britpop to Blind Date making a comeback, it’s shocking that the cars from this decade of automotive history are on the brink of extinction.”
