No easy Ryde for Thomas

- By JAMES DOBSON

® THOMAS BJORN admits that the prospect of captaining Europe in the Ryder Cup is giving him sleepless nights.

Europe take on the USA at Le Golf National in Paris in September.

And the Dane wants revenge for the crushing 17-11 defeat at Hazeltine in 2016.

“In terms of how all-consuming the captaincy is, I really feel it’s on my mind 24/7,” said Bjorn. “I even wake up in the middle of the night thinking about it.

“When I see Tyrrell Hatton and Sergio Garcia, my mind is on them, how they’re playing and how I can utilise them.

Shape

“I thought that I might play a few tournaments in December, but when I came off the 18th green at the Nedbank Golf Challenge I changed my mind. I was glad not to be playing in December, because I have so many thoughts about the team.

“I used all of December to get these thoughts down on paper and get my head straight about how I want this team to take shape.

“It really is on my mind all of the time.

“No matter what little thing I’m thinking about, it has a Ryder Cup perspective.

“Everything people say about it is true, and it’s a lot more than you think it will be.”

Bjorn, 46, gets the chance for a rehearsal when he captains a European team against Asia at the EurAsia Cup, which starts today in Kuala Lumpur.
