ESCAPE BIG FREEZE WITH CHEAP HOLS

- By ALEXANDER BROWN

BRITS can afford to escape the cold snap after it emerged holiday prices have fallen.

A new study revealed trips to our favourite getaways are up to 40% cheaper thanks to the rising value of the pound.

The offers come as the country shivered yesterday ahead of the weekend’s big freeze.

Temperatures are expected to plunge to -10C as northern areas struggle with snow, thick fog and ® flooding. But those looking for an escape to sunnier climes will be warmed by the falling costs.

Post Office Travel Money says the deals were sparked by the pound’s year-on-year gains against 70% of the top 40 holiday currencies.

Prices were down by 36% in Dubai, 31% in St Lucia, and 27% in New Zealand. The cheapest destination is Bulgaria. The Czech Republic and South Africa also offer value for money.

The pound has also strengthened by 9.4% against the US dollar, 10.3% against the Kenyan shilling and 17.3% against the Turkish lira compared to this time last year.

Cheap prices could not have come at a better time, with Britain braced for an Arctic storm and sub-zero temperatures in the coming weeks.
