Duzza is back from the brink
GLEN DURRANT and Scott Waites staged astonishing comebacks yesterday to set up what could be a classic semi-final today at the BDO World Darts Championship at Lakeside.
Both men came back from 4-1 down to triumph 5-4, and for defending champion Durrant, it means he is a BDO player for the rest of his career.
‘Duzza’ looked on the way out against close friend Jim Williams before hitting back in sensational fashion. And by reaching the last four, he’s contracted to return here next year and has no plans to switch codes and bid for a place in the PDC.
“I am a BDO player for life,” said Durrant.
“But to win this match against Jim... I am so emotional and I cannot believe it.
Obstacle
“He should have won. It is bittersweet for me. He will be world champion one day, I love him to bits.”
Durrant remains on course to become only the fourth man behind legends Eric Bristow, Raymond van Barneveld and Martin Adams to retain the Lakeside crown.
However, Waites, the champion in 2013 and 2016, will provide a major obstacle, as he proved by defeating Andy Baetens.
The Belgian looked set for the semis but Waites hit back to win the final set 4-2.
