Dyche: No need for Brit bosses to go abroad

- by TIMOTHY ABRAHAM

BURNLEY boss Sean Dyche says the power of the Premier League means British managers are less interested in working abroad.

Dyche today pits his wits against Crystal Palace counterpart Roy Hogdson, who enjoyed managerial stints in Sweden, Switzerland, Italy, Denmark and the UAE.

The 46-year-old has the utmost respect for Hodgson’s nomadic career ahead of Burnley’s trip to Selhurst Park.

But Dyche says Brit bosses are now less inclined to look for jobs abroad.

“English football, at the moment, is very powerful,” he said. “In the past, it has been so in varying places, but the Premier League era has enhanced it.

‘‘The knock-on effect is that the Championship is very powerful, so a lot of managers want to be in there, let alone the Premier League.

“If you’re a British manager, why go somewhere else when it’s happening here as much as anywhere?

“For football education would you go abroad? Yes. For recognition? Not really.

“I think that you would get recognised more here for doing well across the Championship or Premier League than you would for doing well wherever, like Roy Hodgson at Malmo.

“You’d get recognised, but not in the same way as you would by winning the Championship or going through the system in the Premier League and doing well as a coach, assistant or a manager.”

Dyche was linked with the vacant jobs at Leicester, Everton and Palace this season before they were given to Claude Puel, Sam Allardyce and Hodgson respectively.

And he believes all managers need a dose of luck alongside hard work to follow their ideal career path. He added: “There will be a time when I’m not here at Burnley for whatever reason, good or bad, and when that happens, the next challenge comes along.

“People ask, ‘Where do you want to go in football?’. But it’s not like that.

“In football, you need a bit of luck – twists of fate, the timing, the groups of players you get, good recruitment, sometimes a wealthy owner and Premier League wealth in general.

“So many factors to combine to keep going through the system. You hope, within all that, the good work that you do gets recognised.”
