SUCH is the popularity of cars like this Mitsubishi L200 everyone seems to want one.

And that’s not surprising because today’s generation of pick-ups are kitted out more like a limo than a truck.

Standard kit on the L200 includes cruise control, reversing camera, trip computer, auto lights and wipers and an electric rear window.

Top spec Barbarian models also get satnav, climate control, privacy windows and leather trim.

Now, though, Mitsubishi has made another change to the vehicle that actually involves its main purpose... that of being a working vehicle.

Extra strengthening has been added to load-bearing areas of the chassis to increase towing weight from 3.1 to 3.5 tonnes and give it a 75kg payload rise to 1,135kg.

Mitsubishi says: “The L200 is the only pick-up that can tow 3.5-tonnes on tarmac in four-wheel drive.”

And all you wanted to know was whether it has added a heated leather steering wheel to its heated seats. REAR MIRROR MONSTER: Aggressive three-piece spoiler with honeycombe inserts and chevron-style slashes, plus twin bonnet bulge and two Merc badges all succesfully complete the monster look. Vast exhausts, lights that sweep in from the sides and a long but low window make it pretty, but I’d dump the 220d badge. PLAYTIME PLEASER: Satnav, twin-zone climate control, trip computer, heated electric front seats with memory, heated door mirrors, all-round parking sensors, headlight washers, auto lights and wipers, DAB stereo with Bluetooth and twin USB. Big pull out rugged Skoda-style double bag hook in the centre of the boot. NAUGHTY NIGGLES: Rear view is badly compromised by long, sloping, rear window so you’re totally in the hands of parking sensors. Front 245/40 low profiles send shudders through the car if you hit a pothole. Not slow and a terrific cruiser, but with looks like this who cares? WONGA WONDER: It seems like a 60 grand car for 40 grand. WOULD CHANTELLE LIKE IT? Chantelle would be happy until she got to a railway station car park, where you’re charged for bays that are clearly not big enough for cars like this.
