Let’s hail a legend

- By DAVE ARMITAGE

PRESSURE is mounting on Premier and Football League chiefs to honour Cyrille Regis this weekend.

The former England striker (above) died this week aged 59.

The ex-West Brom, Aston Villa and Coventry ace is an iconic figure in the game for his stance against racism in the late 70s.

But there is dismay at the fact no formal celebration or recognition is planned.

West Brom have an away fixture but have expressed their gratitude to home club

Everton, who have agreed to mark the occasion with a minute’s applause. Both teams will also wear black armbands.

Aston Villa will also hold a minute’s applause at their home fixture with Barnsley, as will Coventry before their League Two clash with Swindon.

But there has been surprise from his former clubs and further afield that neither the Premier League or Football League are marking his death.

The FA Cup replays this week did not include a minute’s silence.

And Viv Anderson, the first black player to play for England, can’t believe so little is being done.

The former Nottingham Forest and Arsenal defender said: “His life and career should be properly recognised. I am bit disappointed that won’t be the case.

“It seems small-minded. Cyrille led the way for many black players and he was taken so suddenly.”

West Brom boss Alan Pardew said: “What’s come out since his sad passing has been the love for him. I think that’s been genuine.”
