EDMUND CAN BE KING

Kyle targets Aussie title

-

KYLE EDMUND roared into the quarter-finals of the Australian Open yesterday and then vowed: ‘I can win it’.

Britain’s injured double Wimbledon and Olympic champion Andy Murray has lost five times in the Melbourne final.

But Edmund genuinely believes he can go one better after beating Italy’s Andreas Seppi 6-7 7-5 6-2 6-3 to set up a quarterfinal clash tomorrow with third-seeded Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov.

Believe

Edmund, 23, lost the first set but took control to overpower Seppi.

After reaching the last eight at a Grand Slam event for the first time, Edmund said: “You have to believe it. That’s why I’m in the quarter-finals, because every time I step on the court and I’m playing, I believe I’m going to win.

“So it’s no different now. The next ® from IAIN STEWART in Melbourne opponent... I take it one step at a time. Whoever I’m playing I have to believe I’m going to win and believe in my game.

“That’s the way I have approached it, one match at a time, and I will continue to do that.

“You’ve just got to do your own thing and trust it. If you don’t believe in what you’re doing, then you need to start doing what makes you happy or change it or start believing it.

“It’s great to be in the quarter-finals. It’s certainly my best result at a slam.

“It’s not easy to win four matches at a Grand Slam. It shows I’m improving, also that the hard work is paying off.

“I have known for a while that my game is a good game and it’s dangerous and it can beat a lot of players.

“I feel I have a good ability to control matches and the outcome of matches. I just have to learn for myself where I have not been getting it right to get it right.”
