BLOWN AWAY

CRICKET Five-star pace pair skittle Eoin flops

-

ENGLAND’S hopes of a stunning clean sweep were demolished after just 38 balls.

By that point Eoin Morgan’s side had slumped to 8-5 in their worst-ever start to a one-day innings.

A brave 78 by Chris Woakes (inset) helped them limp to 196.

And Australia did their best to make a game of it before edging home by three wickets to make it 3-1 in the five-game 50-over series.

But there was no escaping the fact England were simply blown away by Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood.

“We need to get better at playing better balls – it’s a mindset,” said Morgan.

“I thought they bowled really, really well and the ball moved around.

“That rarely happens in a oneday international for so long.

“It was about finding a balance to take the game to them but also get through a tough period. It was tricky.

“A couple of the guys got really good balls.”

But Morgan insists his side will still take their attacking philosophy into tomorrow’s final game in Perth, adding: “We don’t want to lose our positive from RODNEY WHITE in Adelaide mindset but it’s a balancing act. We don’t want to wipe 10 overs out of the game and say, they bowled well but we only got 15-20 runs. “We still want to take the game forward. I’d rather probably be 40-2 than 20-0. We just need to get better at playing that way.” Woakes was England’s standout performer, being dismissed for the first time in the series but not before he had hit 78 off 82 balls, including five sixes. He put on 51 for the seventh wicket with Moeen Ali (33) and 60 for the ninth with Tom Curran, who hit 35 and showed a lot of composure for a man playing only his second one-day international. Woakes also took England’s first wicket, David Warner, but they were unable to get his opening partner Travis Head cheaply. He made a powerful 96 until he pulled Mark Wood straight down Morgan’s throat at mid-on. That left Australia 180-6 and there was more drama when Cummins was run out attempting a needless second run with only 12 needed.
