BRITAIN will be walloped by a snow and ice bomb as we plunge into the freezer for 10 days.

Forecasters say the coldest weather of the winter will hit this week, with huge swathes of the country on high alert.

BRITAIN will be walloped by a snow and ice bomb as it is plunged into the freezer for a bone-chilling 10 days.

The coldest spell of the winter is forecast to hit our shores this week as Arctic conditions take hold, leaving some areas shivering in -15C conditions. Yellow weather cautions are in place from today until Wednesday for almost the entire nation, stretching from the tip of Scotland down to Brighton. Up to a foot of the white stuff is predicted to fall by the end of the week. The Met Office’s Greg Dewhurst said: “There is the potential for this week to bring the coldest spell of winter so far. “We could see temperatures dip below last month’s -13.7C.” The mercury will plummet to -10C in some regions but will feel more like a numbing -15C, according to weather experts. And a Scandinavian blitz will pelt Britain with hail, sleet and heavy wintry downpours. Public Health England officials have ramped up its cold weather health alert to a more serious level three as it prepares for the blast. The extreme weather will wreak travel mayhem and highways chiefs are warning drivers to take care to avoid death-trap black ice. Exacta Weather’s James Madden said: “We are looking at temperatures remaining below-average for the foreseeable future and snow on the ground for anything from several days to weeks.” Charity director at Age UK, Caroline Abrahams, said freezing temperatures could spark heart attacks and strokes.
