GOLD TO DRY UP

Glory days are over

-

TEAM GB bosses fear their Olympics bubble will burst despite the gold rushes at Beijing, London and Rio.

Nobody expects a massive haul from our Winter Olympic athletes in South Korea during the next fortnight.

UK Sport have invested more than £28m in the 59-strong British team in Pyeongchang and anything between five and 10 medals will be seen as a good return.

But British fans have lived on a diet of medals, as success has been bettered at summer Games after Games.

Britain won 67 medals at the 2016 Rio summer Olympics, two more than in London.

But BOA chairman Sir Hugh Robertson has warned things cannot keep improving.

“At some stage we won’t do better than the last Games, we all accept that,” he said.

“I think we have an obsession with a particular number of medals. If there are moments that set the Games alight, ® from JAMES TONEY like our women’s hockey team did in Rio, then we should cherish that too.”

Lizzy Yarnold carried the flag at yesterday’s opening ceremony, though she was overshadowed by a bare-chested man from Tonga who only took up skiing last year and the team from Bermuda who came in their shorts.

Skeleton sled racer Yarnold is looking to become the first Brit to defend a Winter Olympic title after taking gold in Sochi.

She said confidence is high, despite an ankle injury to leading medal hope Katie Ormerod which ruled her out of the snowboard events.

“You can tell we have a strong team,” said Yarnold.

“There is a relaxed confidence and focus. I can’t wait for this to be hopefully our best Winter Olympics.” Watch top British medal hope Elise Christie in speed skating action at 11am on Eurosport 1 today.
